On Thursday last, the sports hall in Presentation played host to two South East basketball semi finals, that saw the home side take on Stella Maris, Tramore at under 16 and under 19 level. Both Presentation teams maintained an unbeaten record throughout the league stages of the competition following wins over Bridgetown, Colaiste Bride, OLOL New Ross and Loreto Wexford to see them gain home advantage for the semi-finals.
First on court were the under 16 side, and from the early stages, it was evident that it was going to be a tight game. Both teams were defending with a trojan like work ethic and scores were hard to come by. The 1st quarter ended with the home side trailing Tramore, 6-8.
The Wexford side asserted themselves more in the second quarter and outscored their opponents 6-2 during the defence dominating period to leave the half time score in their favour. A basket separated the sides as Presentation led 12-10 at the changeover.
Presentation really hit a purple patch in the third quarter and began to dominate proceedings. The played confident defence, setting the platform for some great team attacks and left their opponents in their wake, outscoring them 12 points to 2, and the score at the end of the penultimate quarter at 24 to 12, in Presentation’s favour.
The final quarter was played in a settled manner by the Pres girls, as they twarted any attacking threat their opponents made. The final buzzer was greeted by delight by the Presentation girls as they had put in a worthy performance to seal their place in the regional decider. The final score was 32-14.
In the under 19 semi-final, Presentation set their stall early and stormed into a 14 to 1 point lead at the end of the first quarter. The pace of the game dropped considerably in the second quarter as Tramore started to find their range, bringing themselves back into the game. At half-time the scoreboard read 26-9 in favour of the Presentation.
The second half maintained the same pace as the second quarter, with Tramore working hard for their scores, but Presentation always keeping the scoreboard ticking over and maintaining their control on the game. The match finished 42-15 and the senior team join their under 16s in the finals, which will be a double header in WIT on Monday 5th December.

Loreto Wexford won both of their semi-finals on Friday last against St Anne’s, Tipperary and so a mouthwatering clash is guaranteed in a unique, all-Wexford final.
