PRESENTATION SECONDARY SCHOOL WEXFORD

STUDENT CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

Rationale:

The Code of Behaviour Exists:

1.                  To create a caring and effective learning environment.

2.                   To foster responsible behaviour which enhances self-reliance, dignity, self-discipline and a sense of self worth.

3.                  To foster mutual respect between all members of the school community.

4.                   To protect the rights of pupils to learn and teachers to teach.

The school is committed to communicating agreed policies and working in co-operation with parents, in the spirit of Nano Nagle, to build a sense of pride in the school and respect for the whole school environment.


 

EXPECTATIONS

 

SANCTIONS

Rule (1)

·         Students must be courteous and respectful towards teachers, students and all members of the school community

Sanction

·         Disrespectful/abusive behaviour or language will incur suspension.

Rule (2)

·         Students must be present and on time for all classes morning and afternoon and attend school regularly.  A letter of explanation from parent/guardian, written in student journal, to all class teachers is required on returning from absence.

·         Students arriving to school late must sign the register at the school office.

·         If a student needs to leave the school during school hours

1)       She must get permission from Tutor, Year Head, class teacher or management.

2)       She must have note of explanation in journal from parent/guardian (except when going home sick).

3)       She must sign out at General Office.

4)       She must be collected by a family member at the office or make suitable prior arrangement with school management.

Sanction

·         Detention for failure to comply.

·         Late three times - Detention

·         Pupils who absent themselves from  class without permission, the following procedure will apply:

1)       First offence: parents called in to meet tutor/year-head and in-school suspension given.

2)       Second and further offences: suspension.

Rule (3)

·         Each student must work conscientiously and carefully perform the homework assigned to the best of their ability.

·         Students must come prepared with all books, ingredients, equipment etc. needed for all classes

Sanction

1)       First offence: warning given and homework to be presented the following day.

2)       Second offence: punishment exercise.

3)       Third offence: detention given and recorded in discipline book.

2)       Second offence: punishment exercise

3)       Third offence: detention

4)       Further offences: report to management

Rule (4)

·         The correct wearing of school uniform during school hours and going to and from school is a strict requirement. Flat shoes only.

·         Students must maintain their uniform to a high standard.  Students are asked to come to school well groomed and to ensure that their general appearance and hairstyles are appropriate to the wearing of school uniform.

Sanction

·         Students not wearing correct school uniform will not be allowed to attend class.

·         Students not wearing full school uniform to and from school will get detention.

Rule (5)

·         The wearing of jewellery other than one small earring in each lobe and one ring on each hand is not allowed.  No other visible body piercings are allowed.

·         No make-up to be worn.

Sanction

·         Jewellery, other than that specified will be confiscated.

·          Students will be asked to remove make-up.


Rule (6)

·         Students must keep their classrooms and school grounds tidy.

Sanction

·         Students found littering will incur clean up duty and/or detention.

Rule (7)

·         By law smoking is prohibited at all times in or around school premises and on school outings.  Students are prohibited from smoking anywhere in school uniform.

Sanction

·         Students smoking while in uniform and in or around school and on school outings will be suspended.

·         Persistent offenders of this regulation will be referred to the Board Of Management and may be referred to the Health Board, which could lead to prosecution and fine.

Rule (8)

·         Chewing gum is not allowed.

Sanction

·         Clean up duty.

Rule (9)

·         Students are not allowed to leave the school grounds at lunchtime.

·         Loitering in the vicinity of the school is not allowed.

Sanction

·         Students out at lunch time without permission will be suspended.

·         Detention

Rule (10)

·         Outside school times, it is expected that pupils will continue to conduct themselves in a dignified manner thus fostering the good name of the school.

Sanction

·         Any misconduct that brings the school into disrepute will be dealt with severely.

Rule (11)

·         The possession of alcohol or any illegal substances on school premises or at school events is strictly prohibited.

Sanction

·         Student will be suspended and will be referred to Board Of Management and to the Gardai.

Rule (12)

·         Students must respect the school security and fire alarm systems.

Sanction

·         Any interference with school security or fire alarm is considered to be a very serious offence and will lead to suspension.

Rule (13)

·         Mobile Phones

1)       Phones must be powered off at all times except 11.00-11.10and 12.30-1.25

2)       Picture phones are totally banned in school and on any school related activities.

Sanction

 

·        If a student is found to have a phone on at times other than those specified, then the phone will be confiscated for one week.

·        Picture phones will be confiscated and will not be returned until the last day of term.

Rule(14)

·         Students must respect school property at all times

·         Students must respect the property of other students.

·         Students must take responsibility for the safe keeping of their own property including books and all other valuables.

Sanction

·         Any damage caused to school property will be dealt with severely.

·         Stealing is considered to be a very serious offence and will incur a serious sanction.


SERIOUS AND/OR PERSISTENT MISBEHAVIOUR

Students who seriously and/or persistently misbehave will be referred to the Board Of Management. The school considers suspension to be a serious sanction and any student who has been suspended three times will be referred to the Board Of Management.

The expulsion of a student, which is the ultimate sanction, is the prerogative of The Board of Management of the school.

 

ESSENTIALS OF SCHOOL UNIFORM

·        Official bottle green knee length skirt or official school trousers.

·        V-neck bottle green jumper with school crest – two recommended.

·        Two white shirts with collar and revere for seniors / Two Honey Gold Trutex shirts with collar and revere for juniors.  Bottle green socks.

·        A green school jacket or green fleece.

·        A pair of flat black or brown shoes – no boots and no high or platform shoes allowed.

·         White apron for Home Economics students.

 

 

P.E.Classes

 

All students are expected to come with their gear and participate fully in P.E. class each week.  If, as a result of illness or injury, a student is unable to participate then she must have a relevant signed note in her journal from her parent/guardian.  Persistent or ongoing illness will require a doctor’s certificate.

Students who come unprepared for class:         

First offence                 – warning given +punishment exercise

            Further offences            – detention + punishment exercise.

P.E.  UNIFORM

·        Navy track suit bottoms.

·        Red polo shirt.

·        Securely fastened sports runners and sports socks.

·        Sports shorts optional for warmer days - red, navy or white only.

·        Red sweatshirt – optional.

NOTE: In the interest of safety no jewellery to be worn during P.E. classes.

 

 

DETENTION PROCEDURES

In the interest of fairness to all students the following procedures apply.

·        Parents/guardians will always be contacted by post when a student is on detention.

·        The student must attend detention on the date stated on the letter.

·        If a student fails to turn up for her detention then she will get an evening detention.

·        If the student fails to turn up for her evening detention then she will be suspended.

NOTE:  If a student is absent on the day of her detention, then it is her responsibility to meet with the Deputy Principal on returning to school, with a signed note in her school journal from her parents/ guardians explaining her absence.  In this case her detention will be transferred to another day.


SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS

The school building and grounds are supervised from 8.30am until 4.15pm. Supervised study is available from 4.10pm until 7.00p.m.

EDUCATION (WELFARE) ACT, 2000

The provisions of the Education (Welfare) Act, 2000 apply to all students.
